Are you a student and looking for ideas on how to jumpstart conversations with others on your campus? Or, maybe you’re looking for research or practicum ideas that focus on advance care planning or end of life care? Perhaps you are seeking additional training on how to jumpstart conversations with the individuals/families you’ll care for someday. No matter what you are studying and at which level (from undergraduate to doctorate), The Conversation Project (TCP) and other fabulous organizations have resources to get you started.
For students seeking to host an event on campus
- Check out our compilation of resources to support college student leaders or others who want to host a TCP-inspired event on their college campus.
- Listen to this TEDxTufts talk by Isabel Merrin, Let’s Talk About Death. In it, Isabel tackles ideas about death and dying, and why young people are so afraid to have these tricky conversations.
- Consider hosting a book club, a film screening and discussion, playing a game or hosting a “death over dinner” event. End the event by handing out or sharing a link to our free Conversation Starter Guide, Your Guide to Choosing a Health Care Proxy, or Your Guide to Being a Healthcare Proxy as a take home to prompt action. Check out the following resources that could help:
- Need a little inspiration? Check out this short video, featuring students from St. Olaf College: Young Adults Talk (About Death)
For students in the health care field (any level)
- Check out the IHI Open School Online Course: Having the Conversation: Basic Skills for Conversations about End-of-Life Care: In conjunction with the Boston University School of Medicine and The Conversation Project, the IHI Open School offers this course to introduce students and health professionals to basic skills for having conversations with patients and their families about end-of-life care wishes. This course will also help you develop skills to have conversations with patients and their families about their preferences for care at the end of life. As part of developing these skills, the course invites you to “have the conversation” yourself, with a family member or other loved one. IHI Open School self-paced online courses are FREE to students, residents, faculty, and inhabitants of the Least Developed Countries. If you fall into the categories described, register yourself on ihi.org and visit IHI’s Virtual Education Platform to begin your learning journey.
- Listen to the Webinar recording or scroll through the slide presentation from this call on “Reaching, Engaging and Harnessing the Power of Students.” You’ll hear from two medical students and one nursing school professor who are engaging other students to have conversations about what matter most through the end of life.
- Use TCP for your research project or practicum thesis: Take a peak at this sampling of research on advance care planning and conversations centered on end of life issues.
- End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) offers a host of end-of-life resources/courses.
- The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) provides a plethora of resources and tools focused on caring for those with serious illness, to increase effective, patient-centered communication skills, including a course on Advance Care Planning Conversations.
For students in Divinity or Mortuary schools
- Read this reflection from a research associate with the Pluralism Project at Harvard Divinity School on Virtual Mourning: Living and Grieving On-line.
- The Grave Woman hosts numerous courses for mortuary and deathcare students, including courses on cultural competency and racism in death care.
We hope the above sampling of resources spark an idea and help you get started. Let us know why this is important to you and what you may be planning. And, if you have other resources that other students would benefit from, please share them below!

Hi, colleagues:
I am just wondering whether our video Young Adults Talk: About Death from St. Olaf College is available on your site? If so, maybe link it on this page, as well? If not, just let me know…maybe you find it less relevant in light of all these terrific resources.
